Terrain and Trails

Australian trail riding runs mostly on forest roads and fire trails. Single track is off-limits on most public land. Each state and territory sets its own rules, but the eastern states share one pattern: a registered bike, a licensed rider, and formed roads only.

Victoria's Conservation Regulator counts about 40,000 km of public roads and tracks in its forests and parks (trail bike booklet, July 2025). Queensland's parks service lists state forests and national parks open to registered trail bikes, from the South Burnett to the Sunshine Coast hinterland (QPWS).

The racing shows the rest of the country's terrain:

  • Desert. Finke runs from Alice Springs to Aputula along sections of the old Ghan railway service track, about 229 km each way (Wikipedia).
  • Mallee sand. The Hattah Desert Race runs laps near Red Cliffs in north-west Victoria.
  • Hard enduro. Australian Hard Enduro Championship laps run 15 to 45 km. The organiser says most riders choose two-strokes (how to race).

Western Australia is the outlier. It has designated off-road vehicle (ORV) areas where an off-road-registered bike can ride without a road licence (WA Government).

Best Regions

Pick a region by its legal riding first, then by its racing. Every row below has a named, official place to ride or a 2026 race.

Region Base Legal riding 2026 event
Hunter, NSW Dungog Event entry AusEnduro, 11–12 April
Mid North Coast, NSW Kempsey Event entry AusEnduro, 8–9 August
Mallee, Vic Red Cliffs Event entry Hattah, 3–5 July
Bunyip State Park, Vic Forest Road camp Graded park tracks —
South-east Queensland Mount Mee, Mapleton Park roads; Gheerulla track AusEnduro, 16–17 May
Perth, WA Pinjar, Gnangara ORV areas —
Red Centre, NT Alice Springs Public roads; events Finke, raced 7–8 June
Canberra, ACT Uriarra, Pierces Creek Fire trails —

AusEnduro dates come from the series calendar. The ACT rule is under Regulations below.

Victoria. Bunyip State Park grades its tracks by difficulty and has a trail-bike unloading and camping area on Forest Road. Two named routes are the 15 km Blue Range circuit and the 43 km Gentle Annie Track. DEECA calls the Upper Goulburn and Big River area "perfect for 4WD adventures, trail bike riding, fishing and hunting."

Queensland. In D'Aguilar National Park, registered bikes use the forest drive network in the Mount Mee section, with a 40 km/h limit (QPWS). Mapleton has the 26 km Gheerulla track, for trail bikes only. QPWS also names Benarkin, Yarraman, Lockyer, Byfield, Cathu, Mia Mia and Barakula (QPWS).

Western Australia. Pinjar Motorcycle Area is open to off-road motorcycles. Bikes must be registered and riders must wear a helmet, boots and protective clothing. Entry is $8.50 a day per vehicle or $50 for an annual pass. Gnangara takes motorcycles of all classes, with no driver's licence or road registration needed. Both still need ORV registration.

Tasmania. Peron Dunes is a Vehicle Recreation Area "for experienced four-wheel drive and motorbike users only".

Notable Events

Finke Desert Race (Northern Territory)

The Finke Desert Race is a two-day race from Alice Springs to the Aputula (Finke) community and back. It runs every year on the King's Birthday long weekend in June.

2026 (50th race), raced Sunday 7 and Monday 8 June. David Walsh won the bikes in 3 hours 49 minutes 27.9 seconds. It was his sixth title, equalling Toby Price's record. Madison Healey won Queen of the Desert. The field of more than 670 bikes was the largest in the race's history (ABC News).

2027: 11–14 June, per Tourism NT.

Bike entries need a Senior National MA licence and a MyLaps MX transponder. The 2026 field was capped at 750 bikes, with a waitlist beyond that (competitor page).

Australian Enduro Championship (AusEnduro)

AusEnduro is Motorcycling Australia's national enduro championship. Rounds use three formats: sprints, cross-country races of laps over 10 km, and time-card enduros.

Rounds Venue 2026 dates
1 and 2 Roma, Qld 7–8 March
3 and 4 Dungog, NSW 11–12 April
5 and 6 Queensland Moto Park, Qld 16–17 May
7 and 8 Casterton, Vic 20–21 June
9 and 10 Kempsey, NSW 8–9 August
11 and 12 Coonalpyn, SA 5–6 September

2026 champions. Wil Ruprecht took the Pro Enduro title, 249 points to Korey McMahon's 221, and also won E2. Cooper Sheidow won E1, McMahon E3, Jess Gardiner the women's class (her 10th) and Kai Austin the juniors (AusEnduro report, 7 September 2026).

From 2027, E2 and E3 are abolished. An all-powers Pro Enduro class gets Australian championship status, and E1 becomes Pro Lites with the same capacity limits (Motorcycling Australia, 1 September 2026).

Hattah Desert Race (Victoria)

The North West Victorian Motorcycle Club runs the Hattah Desert Race, about 26 km south of Red Cliffs. Its field grew from 70 riders to 650 by 2016.

The 2026 race ran 3–5 July. Seniors raced eight 37 km laps, about four hours. Women raced four laps. A full national competition licence was required (competitor page). Korey McMahon won (Transmoto).

Australian Hard Enduro Championship

The AHEC runs two-day rounds. Most rounds are laps; the Hillstorm Challenge is point-to-point. The organiser says the events are "not suitable for novice or beginner riders."

Ruben Chadwick and Ebony Nielsen won the 2026 titles on Beta RR 300 Race two-strokes. Both won every main race of the five-round series, which finished at Corryong, Victoria (Dirt Action).

Australian Four Day Enduro (A4DE)

The A4DE was first run at Cessnock over Easter 1978. Of 125 entries, 43 finished, and Victoria's Norm Watts won (Transmoto). Motorcycling Australia's honour roll lists the 2022 event at Rawson, Victoria, won by K. Bacon, and the 2023 event at Harvey, WA, won by Jonte Reynders.

Communities/Clubs

Racing runs through clubs, and clubs run through the state bodies.

Riders

  • Stefan Merriman was born in New Zealand and moved to Brisbane in 1993. He raced on an Australian licence and won world enduro titles in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004.
  • Matthew Phillips from Wynyard, Tasmania, became the first EnduroGP world champion in 2016. He had won the junior world title in 2013 and Enduro 3 in 2014 (Port News).
  • Wil Ruprecht is the 2022 FIM Enduro2 world champion (FIM Awards) and the 2026 AusEnduro Pro Enduro champion.
  • Toby Price won the Dakar Rally bike class in 2016 and 2019 and was 2018 FIM rally world champion. He has six Finke bike wins.
  • Daniel Sanders won the 2025 Dakar Rally.
  • Jess Gardiner became the first Australian woman to win the ISDE women's class, in 2013. She won her 10th national women's enduro title in 2026.
  • Josh Strang from Inverell, NSW, was the 2010 GNCC champion in the United States (GNCC Racing).

Regulations/Permits

Australia has no national trail-riding law. Each state and territory makes its own rules, and land managers add theirs. Each source in the list at the end carries the date it was checked.

State Public forests and parks Without road registration
NSW Registered, licensed; roads, formed vehicle trails and fire trails Stockton Beach on conditional rego; not State forests
Vic Licence or learner permit; full or recreation rego; open roads and tracks Private land and club venues
Qld Licensed; full rego only; roads open to vehicles Not park or forest roads: conditional rego is not allowed
SA Forest reserves closed except approved events Off-road-only bikes cannot be registered
WA Road-registered on open roads, or ORV rego in ORV areas ORV areas with ORV rego; private land with consent
Tas Registered, licensed, formed tracks Restricted Use (Class B) rego, with the land manager's approval
NT Parks: roads only, or a permit —
ACT Registered, licensed; Uriarra and Pierces Creek fire trails only Private land with the owner's permission

New South Wales

  • State forests. Riders must be licensed, and bikes registered with plates displayed. "Vehicles, including trail bikes and 4WDs, are only permitted on roads, formed vehicle trails and fire trails." Creating or using single trails is an offence unless Forestry Corporation gives written permission. Unregistered bikes and ATVs are not permitted. Cumberland, Australia's only metropolitan State forest, is closed to trail bikes (Forestry Corporation).
  • National parks. Registered vehicles only, on the public access system. No off-road riding, and management trails are generally closed to visitors. NPWS says "No new recreational vehicle areas will be designated in parks" (vehicle access policy, updated 13 October 2026).
  • Stockton Beach. Conditional registration for recreation covers Stockton Beach only. The Worimi Conservation Lands recreational vehicle area there is "currently the only RVA on publicly managed land in NSW" (Worimi Conservation Lands). Conditions: 40 km/h, daylight or floodlit use, minimum age 8 (Transport for NSW sheet). You also need a WCL permit, $88 a year, and must enter at Lavis Lane.
  • Noise. The EPA fines offensive trail-bike noise off-road $270 (EPA).

Victoria

  • State forests. You need a motorcycle licence or learner permit, and full or recreation registration (Explore Outdoors). Ride roads and tracks built for four-wheeled vehicles. "It's illegal to take vehicles off-road on public land" (vehicle use, updated 2 June 2026). Natural terrain, streams and informal single tracks are illegal.
  • Recreation registration is barred from freeways and arterial roads. On public land the bike must stay on open, formed roads. It needs a silencer to 94 dBA or less (VicRoads, September 2025).
  • National parks. "There are no legal 'single trails' for motorbike use on public land" (Parks Victoria, January 2023).
  • Unregistered bikes and unlicensed riders are limited to private land and motorcycle club venues (booklet).
  • Seasonal closures. Many state forest roads close between June and November (Explore Outdoors). Parks Victoria's closures generally run from after the King's Birthday weekend in June to the end of October (Parks Victoria).

Queensland

  • Parks and state forests. "Riders must be licenced and trail bikes must be fully registered; conditionally-registered bikes are not allowed." Off-track riding is banned, and so is motocross. In state forests a road with no sign allowing vehicles is closed. Individual riders need no permit; groups, events and commercial activity do (QPWS).
  • Pine plantations. HQPlantations requires full registration and formed roads only. Under-18s cannot ride there. Groups of five or more motorbikes need an organised event permit.
  • Council land. Brisbane bans motorbikes in council parks and natural areas (Brisbane City Council). The Gold Coast bans them in all parks and reserves (City of Gold Coast).

South Australia

  • Forests. "Vehicle access into forest reserves is not permitted," except for approved events. Forests close on Total Fire Ban days (ForestrySA).
  • Registration. An off-road-only bike made after October 1977 cannot be registered without an Australian compliance plate (sa.gov.au). Driving an unregistered vehicle on a road carries a maximum fine of $7,500. "Road" is defined so broadly that riding an unregistered off-road motorcycle on a reserve may be an offence (Law Handbook).

Western Australia

  • ORV registration costs $35 plus $15 for plates. You must be 18 to register, and it expires on 30 September each year (Transport WA).
  • Where ORV bikes go. Gazetted ORV areas, or private property with the owner's consent. No licence is needed in an ORV area, but the rider must be over eight (WA Government). An ORV that needs to reach or cross a public road can be conditionally licensed (Transport WA). One government page lists the gazetted areas as Pinjar, Gnangara, Medina, Lancelin, Ledge Point and York. Another lists Kwinana instead of Medina. Check the official map before you ride.
  • Road-registered bikes with a licensed rider may use any open public road, including roads in State forest and national parks (WA Government). Off-road riding in national parks and nature reserves is prohibited. Drinking water catchments are generally prohibited too.
  • Dieback. Taking a vehicle into a Disease Risk Area needs a written permit (DBCA).
  • Fines. $200 for riding outside a permitted area, $300 for an unregistered ORV and $500 for no helmet. Court maximums are $5,000 (ORV Regulations, from 28 June 2026).

Tasmania

  • Reserves. Registered and licensed, on formed vehicle tracks. Some tracks need special authorisation, and tracks inside a national park need a park pass (Parks and Wildlife Service).
  • Production forests. Fully registered, insured and licensed, on existing tracks. Restricted registration is allowed in some areas (Sustainable Timber Tasmania).
  • Restricted Use (Class B) rego is for recreation. The bike is trailered to the riding area, the rider holds a provisional or full licence, and the land manager must approve. The rules are in Transport Tasmania's MR127 guidelines. It cost $450.70 to establish from 1 July 2026 (fees). Interstate registration may be recognised for up to three months for visitors (Transport Tasmania).

Northern Territory

  • Parks. Drive only on roads, in camping and parking areas, or under a permit (By-laws 1984). Off-road driving in a park needs a permit.
  • Registration. NT conditional registration covers quad bikes and ATVs used for work (NT.GOV.AU). Riding unregistered costs $300, $800 or $1,500, depending on how long the rego has lapsed (NT.GOV.AU).
  • The Finke track is a public road every day except race Sunday and Monday (Finke Desert Race). Road rules apply on it.

Australian Capital Territory

  • Where. "If your dirt/trail bike is registered and you have a motorcycle licence you can ride on the fire trails in the Uriarra Forest and Pierces Creek Forest only" (Access Canberra).
  • Unregistered or unlicensed. Ride only on private land, with the property owner's permission (Access Canberra).

Racing licences

Any official MA event needs a current MA licence (MA). A Senior National licence is for riders 16 and over. It needs paid club membership, proof of competency (a road licence counts), and ambulance cover except in Queensland and Tasmania (MA). MA's Trail Pass covers non-competitive trail events on public or crown land (MA).

Overseas racers have two routes (MA guideline, 2026):

  • Start permission. Bring your FIM licence, start permission from your home federation and your insurer's emergency contact details.
  • Rider release. With a release from your home federation, apply for an MA Senior or Junior National licence. You need private health insurance that covers motorcycle competition, medical repatriation cover, ambulance cover and membership of an MA-affiliated club.

MA one-event competition licences "must not be issued to International Riders", and there is no exception for New Zealand riders.

How to ride legally in Australia

  1. Register the bike and carry a licence. That opens state forest roads and park roads in every eastern state. Victoria also accepts recreation registration.
  2. Stay on formed roads and fire trails. Single track and open ground are off-limits on public land, except in designated areas such as WA's ORV areas and Tasmania's Peron Dunes.
  3. Check closures before you leave. Each forest and park manager lists its own closures.
  4. Without road registration, ride only where the law allows. In Victoria that means private land and club venues. In the ACT it means private land with the owner's permission. WA's ORV areas need ORV registration, and Stockton Beach needs conditional registration.
  5. Enter an event. Club and national events are the legal way onto ground that is closed the rest of the year. You need the right licence.

Best Times

Australia's racing calendar follows its climate. The desert races run in winter.

Month What's on
March–September AusEnduro season (2026: Roma, 7–8 March, to Coonalpyn, 5–6 September)
May–October Dry season in the Top End
June Finke Desert Race (11–14 June 2027)
July Hattah Desert Race (3–5 July 2026)
1 October–31 March NSW Bush Fire Danger Period
November–April Wet season in the tropical north

The tropical north has a wet season from November to April. Monsoon rain can flood and cut roads (Bureau of Meteorology). Tourism NT gives the Top End dry season as May to October (Tourism NT). In the Red Centre, Tourism NT says winter nights can drop below freezing.

The south gets most of its cold-front rain in winter (BoM). That is when Victoria's seasonal road closures fall (see Victoria under Regulations).

Summer is fire season. The NSW dates in the table can vary locally (NSW RFS). In parts of South Australia the 2026–27 fire danger season starts on 15 October 2026 (CFS). The Bureau notes that heatwaves have claimed more lives than any other natural hazard in Australia (BoM).

Our reading of these sources: ride the south and inland from autumn to spring, and the tropical north in the dry.

Logistics

Flying in. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth all have international terminals. Alice Springs Airport, the gateway for Finke, lists flights to Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Melbourne and Sydney (Alice Springs Airport). For Hattah, sign-on is at Red Cliffs, near Mildura.

Riding on an overseas licence. Most states let visiting drivers without a permanent visa drive on a current overseas licence with no time limit. The exceptions are the Northern Territory (3 months) and NSW and Victoria (6 months). Your licence must cover the vehicle you ride. Carry it with an International Driving Permit, or an English translation if it is not in English (Austroads).

Bringing a bike. A CPD carnet lets a tourist import a vehicle temporarily without a Vehicle Import Approval (Australian Border Force). In WA, a carnet vehicle also needs an overseas visitor's vehicle licence before it goes on the road (Transport WA).

Clean everything. Motorcycles must arrive free of soil, seeds and other biosecurity risks. Used vehicles get a full inspection, including under-seat storage (Department of Agriculture). Travellers must declare footwear and equipment used in rural areas. A false declaration can bring an infringement notice of up to $7,280 (Department of Agriculture). That includes your riding boots.

Local Tips

  • Know that 112 is mobile-only. Triple Zero (000) is the emergency number. 112 works from a mobile but not a landline or satellite phone. Neither works with no mobile coverage on any network (Department of Infrastructure). The free Emergency+ app helps a caller give their location.
  • Carry a 406 MHz beacon in remote country. Register it with AMSA. Registration is free, and 121.5 MHz beacons are no longer detected (AMSA).
  • Plan water and stay with the bike. Tourism NT recommends 4–6 litres of water per person per day. If you break down, stay with the vehicle (Tourism NT).
  • Know snakebite first aid. Call 000, keep the person still and apply a pressure bandage. Do not wash, cut or suck the bite, and do not use a tourniquet (Healthdirect). Our first-aid basics cover the rest of a trail kit.
  • Fit a proper silencer. In Victoria, on Total Fire Ban days and in the Fire Danger Period, a vehicle may only be driven through vegetation with an efficient silencing device that takes all of the exhaust (CFA). On a Catastrophic fire danger day, Victoria's state forests and national parks close (Forest Fire Management Victoria).
  • Watch the rain gauge. D'Aguilar's Mount Mee roads close after more than 100 mm of rain in 24 hours (QPWS).
  • Unload away from houses. Victoria asks riders to unload and start bikes away from homes next to state forests (Explore Outdoors).
  • Stand well back at Finke. Spectators must stay at least 30 m from the track (Finke Desert Race).
  • Set the bike up for sand. Hattah and Finke are both raced on sand. Our tire guide covers tyres. The bike setup lesson gives the makers' sand service intervals, which are far shorter than the normal ones. New to it? Start with enduro for beginners.

History & Culture

Organised motorcycle sport in Australia has a national body dating from 1928, when the Auto Cycle Council of Australia (ACCA) formed. It joined the FIM in 1975 and became Motorcycling Australia in late 1992 (MA history).

Desert racing came next. Finke began in 1976 with local riders racing from Alice Springs to the Finke River and back. For 11 straight years after cars joined in 1988, the bikes were faster. A buggy finished first in 1999, and since 2005 there have been two Kings of the Desert, one for bikes and one for cars (Finke Desert Race). The 2020 race was cancelled because of COVID-19, the first cancellation in its history (Wikipedia).

The A4DE followed in 1978 at Cessnock. Australia has hosted the International Six Days Enduro twice: at Cessnock in 1992 and at Traralgon in 1998 (Wikipedia). Australia won the World Trophy in 2015, after the FIM International Disciplinary Court rejected appeals and upheld the disqualification decision against France (Wikipedia).

The Hattah Desert Race is a revival. The North West Victorian club wanted its desert race back after losing the BP Desert Race in the 1970s, and brought Hattah back in 1998 (Hattah Desert Race).

The national enduro championship began as the National Off-Road Series in 2005 and 2006. It became the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) in 2007, came under MA management in 2010 and was renamed AusEnduro in 2025 (AusEnduro). The aorc.com.au site now belongs to the Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship, a desert-racing series for cars, 4WDs and side-by-sides.

Unique Features

  • Desert racing on a national scale. Finke and Hattah each draw hundreds of bikes.
  • Eight sets of rules. Each state and territory decides where a trail bike can go. Read your state's section before you ride.
  • A registered-bike culture. In most of the country, the bike that rides the forest is a road-registered bike with plates.
  • World-class riders, from Stefan Merriman's four world titles to Toby Price's and Daniel Sanders' Dakar wins.

Compare Australia with the United States, where public-land riding also follows designated routes, or with South Africa.
