Compare the destinations

The biggest difference between these countries is not the terrain. It is the law. In Portugal and Romania, unpaved and forest roads are open unless signed closed. In Austria, riding in the forest needs the owner's consent. In the UK, only byways and other roads with vehicle rights are open to motorbikes. Read the legal access column first.

How we chose these destinations

Every country on this list passes at least one of three tests. It hosts a race that defines hard enduro, such as the Erzbergrodeo, Red Bull Romaniacs, the Roof of Africa, Hixpania or Silver Kings. It has a clear legal way for a visiting rider to ride. Or it is home ground for riders who win at world level, as South Africa is for hard enduro, and Australia is for enduro world titles and the Dakar. The eleven are listed in no particular order.

Each guide is written for its own country. We check legal access against the law itself where it is published online, and against official bodies, event organisers and the Trans Euro Trail where it is not. Event dates come from organisers and the FIM, and results from published race reports. Every guide lists its sources with the date we checked them.

We name tour operators on our tours pages, in alphabetical order and with facts only. We never rank them. For more on how we work, read our editorial standards.

Every guide lists its sources and the date we checked each one.
