Terrain and Trails

Bulgaria is mountain country. The Rila range holds Musala, at 2,925 m the highest peak in Bulgaria and in the whole Balkan Peninsula. The Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina), the Rhodopes and Pirin are the other big ranges.

The Trans Euro Trail (TET) has 3,326 km of mapped route in Bulgaria. Use it as a starting point, and check that each section is legal to ride.

Bulgaria's best-known hard enduro rider, Teodor Kabakchiev, was born in Gabrovo and got his first bike at the age of four (Wikipedia).

Best Regions

Rila

Home of Musala, the highest peak in the Balkans.

Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina)

Stara Planina, one of the country's main ranges.

Rhodopes and Pirin

Bulgaria's other major mountain ranges.

How to choose

Use the Trans Euro Trail to plan a route through the region you pick. You remain responsible for obeying signs, barriers and local law on every section. Trail riding is forbidden in parks.

Notable Events

Bulgarian championships

The Bulgarian Motorcycling Federation (BFM) lists three 2026 competitions on its calendar: the national championship (Republican Championship), the BMU European Championship, and the Bulgaria Cup. The BMU is the Balkan Motorcycle Union.

Teodor Kabakchiev's 2026 season

Bulgaria's star rider's major 2026 results, with his first round win of the year at the Roof:

Event Result
Extreme XL Lagares, Portugal 3rd
Silver Kings, Idaho 4th
Red Bull Romaniacs, Romania 2nd
Abestone Hard Enduro, Italy 3rd
Roof of Africa, Lesotho 1st, in 9:59:46.2

After the Roof, he was third in the world championship (Cycle News). Sources for each result: Lagares, Silver Kings, Romaniacs, Abestone.

At Sea to Sky in Turkey (8–10 October 2026) he won the Forest Race, then was disqualified from the Mountain Race for receiving outside help. He disputes the decision (Cycle News). The last world championship round is Hixpania in Spain (23–25 October 2026) (FIM).

Communities/Clubs

  • Bulgarian Motorcycling Federation (BFM). The national federation licenses riders and runs the national calendar. It also runs a SuperEnduro section.
  • Balkan Motorcycle Union (BMU). Its BMU European Championship is listed on the BFM calendar. Kabakchiev has won it.
  • Riders. Teodor Kabakchiev has won the Junior FIM SuperEnduro World Championship, the Spanish Hard Enduro Championship, the BMU European Championship, and the Bulgarian Enduro Championship several times (Wikipedia).

Regulations/Permits

The Forestry Act: marked tracks only

Bulgaria's Forestry Act (Закон за горите), article 148 sets the rules for vehicles in forest territories:

  • Sport motorcycles and ATVs may move in forest territories only on tracks specially marked for them, in the way set by the ordinance that the agriculture and interior ministers issue under art. 148(11) (art. 148(7)).
  • Other road vehicles use forest roads under the conditions of that ordinance. At a mayor's request, the regional forest directorate can open specific forest roads to free traffic, and the municipality must signpost them (art. 148(8)–(9)).
  • Cycling and horse riding in the forest are free, unless restricted.

So in a Bulgarian forest, look for a specially marked track or a forest road opened to traffic. Two more rules in the same Act matter to riders:

  • Road vehicles may not use marked hiking trails, unless the trail coincides with a forest road or is part of a marked route (art. 149(1)).
  • Organised public or sporting events in forest territories need permission from the director of the regional forest directorate (art. 150(1)).

Parks are off-limits

The Trans Euro Trail's Bulgaria page is blunt: trail riding is forbidden in parks, and so is wild camping. It also warns that trails can be closed temporarily or permanently, at short notice, under local law. Obey every sign and barrier.

Your bike

The TET requires every bike to be fully insured, licensed and road-worthy. That is the baseline for any public road or track in Bulgaria.

Tolls

Bulgaria's road tolls use an e-vignette, but the fee is not due for vehicles with fewer than four wheels (BG TOLL). On a motorcycle you do not need one.

Best Times

The Trans Euro Trail gives a clear month-by-month picture:

Months Conditions
April–May Muddy and rainy
June–July Not so hot, almost dry
August–September Dry and hot
October–November Not so hot, almost dry

For most riders, June–July and October–November are the sweet spots.

Logistics

Tolls. No e-vignette for motorcycles.

Camping. Wild camping is forbidden in parks. Outside them, use campsites or ask the landowner.

Racing. For national events, get a licence through the BFM licence portal.

Combine with Romania. Bulgaria borders Romania. Red Bull Romaniacs in Sibiu runs 27–31 July 2027 (Red Bull Romaniacs). See our Romania guide.

Local Tips

  • Look for the markings. In the forest, sport bikes belong on specially marked tracks.
  • Check for park boundaries. Trail riding stops at the park line.
  • Expect closures. Trails can close at short notice under local law.
  • Plan for mud in spring. April and May are wet. Our enduro tire guide helps.
  • Emergency number. Dial 112, free across the EU.
  • Ride within yourself in the mountains. Our safety and setup course covers the basics.

History & Culture

Bulgaria's modern off-road story is carried by one rider more than any other. Teodor Kabakchiev, born in Gabrovo in 1998, went from a birthday bike at four to national and Balkan titles, a Junior SuperEnduro world title, and the Spanish Hard Enduro Championship (Wikipedia).

In 2026 he won the Roof of Africa, the event its organisers call the oldest hard enduro in the world, and took second at Red Bull Romaniacs (Cycle News).

The national structure behind him is the Bulgarian Motorcycling Federation and the Balkan Motorcycle Union, which together run the national and regional championships.

Unique Features

  • A long mapped route. 3,326 km of Trans Euro Trail.
  • The Balkans' highest ground. Musala, 2,925 m.
  • No vignette for bikes. Vehicles with fewer than four wheels pay no e-vignette fee.
  • A world-class home rider. Kabakchiev, 2026 Roof of Africa winner.

Compare with neighboring Romania, where the Forest Code closes forest land to motor vehicles and the legal riding is on public roads, at organised events, and on private land with consent.
