Bike Setup & Maintenance

Skill 4 of 5

Traction‑first setup

  • Suspension: set sag and baseline clickers for your weight and terrain. Slightly softer compression increases grip and reduces deflection.
  • Tires and inserts: choose compound for terrain; mousse or heavy‑duty tubes to avoid flats when crawling.
  • Gearing: lower final drive improves slow‑speed control and reduces clutch heat.

Controls and ergonomics

  • Lever angle, bar roll, and clutch engagement should let you cover controls lightly while standing.
  • Smooth throttle and predictable brakes reduce fatigue and mistakes.

Maintenance that prevents DNFs

  • Chain, brakes, and air filter kept clean; watch for boiling clutch/brakes.
  • Pre‑ride checklist: fasteners, fluid leaks, wheel/spoke check, controls tightness.

A bike that’s quiet, smooth, and compliant makes every skill easier.
