Brand Overview

GasGas grew from a motorcycle shop in Salt, near Girona, run by Narcís Casas and Josep Maria Pibernat. It showed its first trial bike at the 1985 Barcelona show. The name comes from the Spanish 'Vamos! Gas a fondo'. After a 2015 insolvency, Torrot restarted production in 2016. KTM took 60% in October 2019 and full ownership in summer 2020, then relaunched the brand with 19 models. The enduro and motocross bikes now come from Austria. Rieju took over the old Spanish-built enduro line.

GasGas history: from Girona trial bikes to KTM ownership

GasGas grew out of a motorcycle shop in Salt, near Girona. Narcís Casas and Josep Maria Pibernat ran it with Pere Arpa and Joan Regàs. The shop was called Gas Gas. The founders first sold Bultaco and then SWM bikes. When SWM closed, they built a trial bike of their own and showed it at the Barcelona motorcycle show in 1985. GasGas says the name comes from the Spanish call "Vamos! Gas a fondo", or "full gas". The brand sees itself as the successor to Bultaco and SWM.

Trial came first, and enduro followed. GasGas counts 16 FIM trial world titles since 1993 and four FIM Trial-E titles in a row. A GasGas 125 won an enduro world title in 1994.

Crisis, Torrot and KTM

GasGas stopped production in January 2015. In May 2015 it filed for insolvency, and the case went into liquidation. Torrot, a Catalan electric-vehicle maker backed by an investment fund, won the assets. Production restarted in Salt in April 2016 with 65 staff, down from 85. In June 2019 Torrot GasGas shut for half a year.

In September 2019 KTM Industries announced a joint venture with Black Toro Capital, the owner of GasGas. In October 2019 KTM took 60% and Torrot kept 40%. In the summer of 2020 GasGas became fully part of the Pierer Mobility group. The group relaunched the brand in September 2020 with 19 new models: enduro, motocross, cross-country and trial.

The new enduro and motocross bikes came from Austria. The old Girona enduro design went elsewhere. In 2020 Rieju, based in Figueres, took over building the former GasGas EC, XC and GP models. KTM kept the GasGas name and the trial bikes.

The group crisis

GasGas is a brand of KTM AG. It went through KTM AG's 2024–2025 insolvency proceedings with the rest of the group. The restructuring plan paid creditors 30%. Bajaj Auto took control of the listed parent in November 2025, and the parent became Bajaj Mobility AG in January 2026. The full story is on our KTM page.

GasGas sales fell hardest of the three brands. The group sold 8,604 GasGas motorcycles in 2025, down 54.3% on 2024. That was 4.1% of group sales. The group said the GasGas bicycle brand would be sold out by the end of 2025. Bajaj Mobility still lists GasGas as one of its three core motorcycle brands, aimed at off-road and trial.

Where GasGas bikes are made

GasGas says its enduro range comes from the group's plant in Austria. The trial bikes stayed in Spain. The 2025 annual report names "the GASGAS trials produced in Spain" among the few bikes built outside Mattighofen. The EC and EX enduro models are not in that list.

The trial line has moved twice. The TXT Racing trial bikes launched in May 2020 were built only in Girona. In October 2022 the plant moved to an industrial estate in Terrassa, near Barcelona. The move cost 500,000 euros. In October 2025 KTM chief executive Gottfried Neumeister said trial production would move to Mattighofen. Twenty production jobs were affected. Office and customer-support staff stay in Terrassa.

The group also plans an electric trial bike, the GasGas TXE. Its 2025 annual report says the TXE is already used in racing and should join the range in 2026.

GasGas enduro lineup for 2027

GasGas runs a short enduro range next to KTM and Husqvarna. Its maker site lists these models today:

Type International site US site
Enduro EC 300 (2027), EC 350F (2027), EC 300 GP (2025) EC 300 (2027)
Cross-country EX 300 (2027), EX 450F (2024) EX 300 (2027)

GasGas calls the EC 300 "Making hard enduro easy". It calls the EC 350F "The do-it-all enduro bike". The EC 300 GP was a limited edition, the brand's first of its kind. It uses graphics based on the bike that won the 1994 Enduro World Championship.

For model year 2026, GasGas gave the range black Excel rims, a black gripper seat and black Neken bars. It also added a threaded radiator cap and a stronger fuel-line cap. The two-strokes got a rerouted wiring harness. From model year 2027 GasGas offroad bikes carry a Premium Manufacturer's Warranty of up to one year.

EC 300 against the KTM 300 EXC

Our full model page is the GasGas EC 300. The engine matches the listed specs of the KTM 300 EXC: 293.15 cm³, a Keihin 39 mm throttle body and Vitesco engine management. GasGas gives bore and stroke as 72 × 72 mm. The chassis parts differ:

Spec (2027) GasGas EC 300 KTM 300 EXC
Fork WP XPLOR-USD 48 mm, open cartridge WP XACT-USD 48 mm
Shock WP XACT with linkage WP XPLOR with PDS
Subframe All-aluminium Aluminum-reinforced polyamide
Clutch hydraulics Braktec Brembo
Weight without fuel 107.6 kg 104.4 kg
Seat height 956 mm 963 mm
Tank 9 l 9 l

The EC 300 comes on Maxxis MaxxEnduro tires, with a soft rear. Braktec calipers work 260 mm front and 220 mm rear discs. The handlebar map switch is a dealer accessory. It gives two maps, a soft one for slow technical ground and a sharper one for mud.

GasGas also builds motocross bikes on the same group platforms: see the MC 350F and MC 450F.

GasGas's hard enduro racing record

Before KTM: four Erzberg wins

GasGas won the Erzbergrodeo's main race four times before the KTM era, all with Christian Pfeiffer. The event's hall of fame lists him as the Red Bull Hare Scramble winner in 1996, 1997, 2000 and 2004, each time on a Gas Gas. The 2004 win is still the brand's last at Erzberg.

Year Rider Result Bike
1996 Christian Pfeiffer 1st Gas Gas
1997 Christian Pfeiffer 1st Gas Gas
2000 Christian Pfeiffer 1st Gas Gas
2004 Christian Pfeiffer 1st Gas Gas

GasGas riders also finished second several times. The official result sheets list these runner-up finishes:

Year Rider Result Bike (as entered)
2003 Christian Pfeiffer 2nd GasGas FSE 450
2006 Andreas Lettenbichler 2nd Gas Gas EC 250
2011 Dougie Lampkin 2nd Gas Gas EC300E
2012 Dougie Lampkin 2nd Gas Gas EC 300

The KTM era

In 2020 GasGas signed Taddy Blazusiak as its lead enduro rider, on the EC 300 and EC 350F. Blazusiak had won the 2004 European Trial Championship on a GasGas. He placed fifth at Red Bull Outliers in 2022. Michael Walkner, GasGas's test and development rider, raced the 2021 FIM Hard Enduro World Championship as a factory junior.

GasGas has not yet won the FIM Hard Enduro World Championship. Its top finishers in the final standings:

Season Rider Final position Points
2022 Alfredo Gomez 5th 72
2022 Michael Walkner 6th 66
2024 Wade Young 2nd 109
2025 Mitch Brightmore 3rd 142
2025 Wade Young 5th 97

Gomez was third at Hixpania in 2022. At the Red Bull Erzbergrodeo, Gomez was fifth and Walkner sixth in 2022, both on the EC 300. Walkner was seventh in 2023 and fifth at GetzenRodeo that year. Young was fifth at Erzberg in 2024 on the EC 300. Young rode a KTM in 2026.

2026: Brightmore leads the charge

Mitch Brightmore was fourth at Erzberg in 2025 and fifth in 2026, both times on the EC 300. In the 2026 world championship he was second at Extreme XL Lagares. He won the Silver Kings Hard Enduro in Idaho. He then finished second at Forza Orza in Sweden and at Abestone in Italy. After seven of eight rounds he is second in the championship, 32 points behind Lettenbichler, with one round to go. Ashton Brightmore, also on a GasGas, was third at Forza Orza.

In the Iron Road Prolog at Erzberg, Sandra Gomez won the Lady Cup in 2023 and 2024 on a GasGas EC 300.

In EnduroGP, Andrea Verona won the Enduro1 world title in 2021, his first year with GasGas, on an EC 250F. He took the 2025 Enduro2 class on a GasGas, then moved to Red Bull KTM for 2026.

What sets GasGas enduro bikes apart

GasGas shares engines with KTM and Husqvarna. It sets itself apart with chassis parts, suspension and price-focused specs.

Linkage rear, open-cartridge fork

The EC 300 uses a WP XACT shock with a linkage and 300 mm of travel. The KTM EXC mounts its shock directly with PDS. Up front, GasGas uses a WP XPLOR open-cartridge fork, adjusted by hand: compression on the left leg, rebound on the right. KTM and Husqvarna fit the XACT fork. Our PDS vs linkage guide covers the rear-end trade-off.

All-aluminium subframe

KTM and Husqvarna use subframes made partly of polyamide. GasGas keeps an all-aluminium subframe. On the steel frame, a slimmer upper shock mount and thinner tube walls at the front save 300 g.

TBI two-stroke

The EC 300 uses Throttle Body Injection (TBI) with a 39 mm Keihin throttle body. There is no mechanical power valve. An electronic exhaust control opens the side exhaust ports before the main port. An electronic pump meters oil at an average of 60:1, so there is no premix. A rollover sensor stops the engine in a heavy fall. Our TBI vs TPI vs carb guide explains the fueling.

The EC 300 suits a rider who wants the KTM engine with a linkage rear and simpler fork adjustment. The spec sheets above show why: the engines match, and the main differences are the fork, the rear suspension and the subframe. The 3.2 kg it gives away to the 300 EXC on paper is the trade. For the wider 300 two-stroke field, see our buyer's guide. The US site lists only the EC 300 and EX 300. For how the group splits enduro and cross-country models by market, see our KTM EXC vs XC-W guide.
