Hard enduro or desert riding?

Two operators use the words hard enduro. Motor Adventures sells "Hard Enduro Morocco Off-Road Tours". Desert Soul asks riders to bring "A hard enduro bike". Most Morocco tours are long days on desert pistes, sand, dunes and mountain tracks. Desert Soul's daily stages run from "0 - 40 km" to 270 km.

The hardest tours, in the operators' words:

  • Desert Soul: "Mostly hard terrains with challenging and chicken options", for "experienced riders with well-prepared bikes".
  • EnduroXplorer: Déserts Mini Dakar is "réservé aux pilotes confirmés" (for experienced riders only).
  • Moto Enduro Merzouga: its 6-day tour is "an extreme adventure designed for motocross enthusiasts".
  • Ride Expeditions: rates Chasing the Sahara "8 (out of 10)" for difficulty.

Easier: Passions Moto Maroc's Discovery ride is "All levels". Moto Enduro Merzouga says sand riding needs no previous experience. EnduroXplorer's 3-day Atlantique is for all levels.

Wheels of Morocco is different. It rides BMW GS, Ténéré 700 and KTM 390/890 adventure bikes, with 40–50% of each tour on tarmac.

Sahara and Merzouga tours

Six of the eight operators ride the desert. These are the desert formats on sale, as the operators describe them.

  • Long desert crossings. Desert Soul rides a 270 km "King's stage" into Merzouga. EnduroXplorer's Désert tour has a bivouac at Chegaga, and its Déserts Mini Dakar runs Ouarzazate to Errachidia. Moto Enduro Merzouga's 9-day tour runs from Taouz to Erg Chigaga and back, 120 to 200 km a day. Motor Adventures rides dunes "up to 205 m". Ride Expeditions crosses Iriki.
  • Rally-style navigation. Moto Enduro Merzouga offers "rally style navigation". Motor Adventures says it will "hand over your GPS and set you free! Simply follow the purple line".
  • Beach sand. EnduroXplorer's 4-day Atlantique and Wheels of Morocco's Trails of the Sahara both include Plage Blanche, on the Atlantic coast.
  • Short trips. Moto Enduro Merzouga sells a 1-day tour of Erg Chebbi and a 3-day tour. Motor Adventures lists a 3-day Desert Rush.

Most of these tours run with a support vehicle. Desert Soul's truck carries a kitchen. EnduroXplorer lists 4x4 support. Moto Enduro Merzouga uses a Land Cruiser with a mechanic. Motor Adventures carries a defibrillator and oxygen. Ride Expeditions' crew is "typically a lead guide, medic, mechanic and 4x4 driver". Wheels of Morocco sends a support vehicle only "above 5 riders".

How to choose a tour in Morocco

  1. Enduro bike or adventure bike. Seven operators ride enduro bikes: KTM, GasGas, Husqvarna, Beta or KOVE. Wheels of Morocco rides adventure bikes, from a KTM 390 to a BMW GS, on tours with 40–50% tarmac.
  2. Licence. Moto Enduro Merzouga, Motor Adventures, Passions Moto Maroc and Wheels of Morocco require a motorcycle licence. Enduro Raid Maroc asks for a "Valid driving licence". Desert Soul requires a driving licence and has you sign a declaration. Ride Expeditions wants a licence that covers the bike, plus an International Driving Permit. EnduroXplorer doesn't say. The UK government says British riders need the "1968 version of the international driving permit (IDP) and your UK driving licence" (gov.uk).
  3. Insurance. Moto Enduro Merzouga, Motor Adventures, Passions Moto Maroc and Wheels of Morocco require medical and repatriation cover and don't include it. Ride Expeditions makes travel insurance "a condition of booking". Enduro Raid Maroc says insurance is mandatory. Desert Soul includes travel medical insurance. The UK government says "Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities" (gov.uk). Many travel policies exclude off-road motorcycling, so read yours.
  4. Bike damage. Ride Expeditions says "No charges for bike damage". Wheels of Morocco's rental includes "comprehensive insurance cover". Motor Adventures takes a €700 damage deposit on a KTM 450. Enduro Raid Maroc takes €1,000 per bike. Moto Enduro Merzouga (5-day tour) and Desert Soul exclude damage to rental bikes. EnduroXplorer publishes no damage terms.
  5. Own bike or rental. Own bikes are accepted by Desert Soul (shipped from Slovenia and back), EnduroXplorer (on request), Moto Enduro Merzouga, Ride Expeditions (£2,990, £990 less than with a bike) and Wheels of Morocco (€2,900 on Trails of the Sahara). Read bringing your own bike.
  6. Where you'll ride. No operator says whether its tracks are public or private land, and none names a permit. Read land and your own bike, and ask your operator in writing.
  7. Group size. Enduro Raid Maroc takes 6 riders at most, EnduroXplorer 8. Passions Moto Maroc's prices fall as the group grows: MAD 2,750 alone for a Discovery ride, MAD 1,475 each for 7 or more. The others don't say.
  8. Airport. Moto Enduro Merzouga collects from Errachidia (ERH), and from Ouarzazate (OZZ) on its 7-day tour. Motor Adventures and Ride Expeditions use Ouarzazate. Wheels of Morocco and Passions Moto Maroc start in Marrakesh (RAK). Enduro Raid Maroc collects from Agadir (AGA) for groups of 4 or more.

Riding in Morocco: land and your own bike

This covers where the tours ride and bringing your own bike. It uses a Moroccan customs (ADII) circular and the UK government's travel advice. It is not legal advice.

Where the tours ride. No operator here says whether its tracks are public land or private land. None names a permit or a landowner agreement.

Bringing your own bike. Moroccan customs sets out temporary admission, the scheme for bringing a vehicle in for a stay, in yearly circulars. They are written for Moroccans living abroad. The 2024 circular, N° 6568/311 of 30 May 2024, says this for them (ADII):

  • A motorcycle can be admitted alongside a car, "pour un usage strictement personnel et touristique" (for strictly personal and tourist use).
  • Temporary admission lasts 180 days in each calendar year, in one stay or several.
  • Without customs' permission, handing the vehicle to someone else, lending it, transferring it or letting someone use it, even with a power of attorney, is a customs offence.

Confirm the current rule for foreign riders with your operator or with Moroccan customs before you bring a bike.

UK travel advice. The UK government says (safety and security):

  • "You must get a green card from your insurer".
  • Your vehicle is recorded when you enter. "If you're not in the same vehicle when you try to leave the country, they will detain you".
  • British riders need the 1968 international driving permit with their UK licence. The 1949 permit is not accepted.
  • "Road accidents are a frequent occurrence".

It says the land and sea borders with Algeria are closed: "Do not attempt to cross the border". It calls Western Sahara "a disputed territory" (regional risks). British visitors need a passport valid for at least 3 months after arrival and can stay 90 days without a visa (entry requirements). Passions Moto Maroc asks its guests for 6 months.

Things to do around the riding

Merzouga. Morocco's tourism board calls it "one of the gates of the Sahara", in the "territory of the Erg Chebbi". It lists Dayet Srij lake, camel rides, bivouacs and sand baths (Visit Morocco).

Ouarzazate, the Dades and Todra. The Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou is UNESCO-listed, since 1987: "a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco" (UNESCO). The region was a filming location for Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. The tourism board also lists the Dades and Todra gorges, the Tinfou dune, Taourirt Kasbah and Kelaat M'Gouna. Try Berber couscous (Visit Morocco).

Marrakesh. Wheels of Morocco, Desert Soul and Passions Moto Maroc's 6-day tour start here. The medina is UNESCO-listed, since 1985, and was founded by the Almoravids in 1070–72 (UNESCO). See Jemaa El-Fna, the Majorelle garden, El Badi palace, the Koutoubia and the Menara. The local dish is tanjia, which the tourism board calls "mythical" (Visit Morocco).

Essaouira. Passions Moto Maroc's base. The tourism board lists kitesurfing and windsurfing, fish and seafood at the port, the Gnawa festival and the Purpuraires islands (Visit Morocco). Passions Moto Maroc also arranges surfing, golf, yoga, horse riding, hiking and cooking.

Agadir and the coast. Enduro Raid Maroc and EnduroXplorer start here. The tourism board promises "300 days of sunshine" and lists Souss-Massa park, Taghazout and Mirleft. Try argan oil and amlou (Visit Morocco).

The Central High Atlas. Wheels of Morocco's Atlas Off Road passes Bin El Ouidane. Nearby are the Aït Bouguemez valley, M'Goun (4,071 m), the Ouzoud falls and Imi N'Ifri (Visit Morocco).

Getting there

By air. Morocco has 25 airports (Visit Morocco). The operators use four:

  • Errachidia (ERH): Moto Enduro Merzouga, which uses Ouarzazate on its 7-day tour. Desert Soul riders fly home from here.
  • Ouarzazate (OZZ): Motor Adventures and Ride Expeditions.
  • Marrakesh Menara (RAK): Wheels of Morocco and Passions Moto Maroc.
  • Agadir Al Massira (AGA): Enduro Raid Maroc and EnduroXplorer.

Airport codes are from Wikipedia's list of Moroccan airports.

By ferry from Spain. Baleària sails Tarifa to Tanger Ville in "about 1 hour", 17.7 nautical miles. It carries "car, motorcycle, van, or bicycle"; book ahead (Baleària). DFDS sails Algeciras to Tanger Med in "around an hour and a half", with "at least 11 crossings a day". You can "Board with your vehicle - car, motorcycle, or caravan" (DFDS).

Longer ferries. Sète to Tangier takes about 34 hours, Genoa to Tangier about 57 (Visit Morocco).

If you bring your own bike, read bringing your own bike first.

When to go

The south is very hot in summer and cold at night in winter. These are 1991–2020 averages from Morocco's national weather service, published by the WMO:

Town January low / high July low / high
Ouarzazate 1.8 / 17.3 °C 22.7 / 38.8 °C
Errachidia 2.0 / 15.9 °C 25.8 / 39.5 °C
Marrakech 5.9 / 19.1 °C 20.6 / 37.7 °C
Agadir 8.4 / 21.1 °C 19.2 / 26.7 °C

Rain is low in the south. Ouarzazate averages 5.5 mm in January and 14.8 mm in October.

Operator seasons: Motor Adventures rides "September - May". Ride Expeditions lists departures in February, March and November 2027.
