- Enduropark Isábena is a BMW GS centre. It trains and guides on the R 1300 GS, F900GS and R12 G/S, and takes your own bike. Its 9-day Trans-Pyrenees tour covers about 1,200 km, from Sant Feliu de Guíxols to San Sebastián.
- Spanish Enduro Trails runs a separate Adventure Bike Base on the Yamaha Ténéré 700: £800 per rider for 3 nights and 2 days at Gorafe.
- Suntrails Enduro sells KTM 790 Adventure R packages.
Spain's Pol Tarrés races a Yamaha Ténéré 700 in hard enduro.
How to choose a tour in Spain
- Licence. Most operators want a motorcycle licence. Spanish Enduro Trails asks for a full one. Suntrails accepts A or A2, and Dust Devils A2 or full. TrailbikeTours and Trailworld ask for a valid motorcycle licence; Trailworld also sets a minimum age of 21. Dust Devils also has KTM 125s for adults with only a car licence. Soloenduro needs category A on tracks but no licence on its private circuit. Hardcore Spain needs no motorcycle licence on its electric Stark Varg if you are over 26 and have held a car licence for over 3 years; it doesn't say for its GasGas bikes. Jarvis and Sacromonte don't say.
- Insurance. Dust Devils warns that regular holiday policies may "only cover up to 125cc bikes". Holeshot advises cover with repatriation for engines up to 350cc. Sacromonte requires your own cover with assistance. TrailbikeTours and Trailworld recommend medical and repatriation cover. Read the policy for off-road motorcycling.
- Bike damage. TrailbikeTours offers a €300 refundable deposit or €20 a riding day. Sacromonte takes a cash deposit of €300 in English or €500 in Spanish; ask which. It charges crash damage at official prices. Dust Devils and Holeshot don't charge for normal damage. Trailworld charges for careless riding. Jarvis charges for damage beyond normal wear.
- Own bike or rental. Own-bike prices exist at Hardcore Spain (from £50 a rider in a group, £100 a day alone), Dust Devils (adventure bikes, from €190) and Suntrails (€350 for 2 days). Enduropark Isábena and Sacromonte take own bikes too; Sacromonte has car and trailer parking. Brittany Ferries sails from the UK to northern Spain (see Getting there).
- Where you'll ride. Spain has no single national off-road rule. The national forest law hands motor access to each region, and Catalonia's rules are strict. Read where riding is legal in Spain. Soloenduro says it rides only where off-road motorcycles are "permitida". TrailbikeTours calls Aragon's trails "unrestricted"; that is its claim. Sacromonte and Spanish Enduro Trails publish Andalusian tourism registrations. Dust Devils says it is licensed with the Junta de Andalucía but publishes no number. No operator names a track permit. Ask them in writing.
- Fire season. Regions can close forest tracks in high fire risk. Dates vary by region and year. See when to ride in Spain.
- Group size. TrailbikeTours, Jarvis and Trailworld aim for about 6 riders. Spanish Enduro Trails takes up to 10. Sacromonte's tours need 4, or charge €250 more each for 2 or 3; it also sells one-to-one tours. Enduropark Isábena needs at least 3.
- Airport. Málaga (AGP) for the Málaga operators. Alicante (ALC) for Holeshot and Hardcore Spain. Murcia (RMU) for Suntrails and Spanish Enduro Trails. Reus (REU), Zaragoza (ZAZ) or Barcelona (BCN) for TrailbikeTours.
Things to do around the riding
Málaga. Three operators are in Málaga province. The city has the Alcazaba, "one of the largest Arab fortresses in Andalusia", Gibralfaro Castle, a Roman theatre and the cathedral known as "La Manquita" (Spain.info). On the coast, try espetos: sardines "skewered on long canes before being grilled over a wood fire" (Spain.info).
Caminito del Rey. A 7.7 km one-way walk through the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, a gorge with "walls reaching depths of 700 metres". It takes 3 to 4 hours, on walkways "more than 100 metres high". Shuttle buses link Ardales and El Chorro station (Spain.info). Dust Devils' El Chorro Lakes tour rides nearby.
Ronda. The town sits either side of the Tajo gorge. "Three bridges span a ravine more than 100 metres deep" (Spain.info).
Granada. The Albaicín "is a World Heritage Site, alongside the Alhambra and the Generalife" (Spain.info). Sacromonte's Badland Desert tour rides the Gorafe area. Gorafe is in the Granada UNESCO Global Geopark, a geopark, not a World Heritage Site. UNESCO names "the Badlands de Gorafe, particularly the Don Diego Viewpoint" as a geosite.
Matarraña and Teruel. Valderrobres, near TrailbikeTours, "is crowned by a monumental castle", reached over a stone bridge (Turismo de Aragón). Teruel's Mudejar towers are part of a World Heritage Site, and Dinópolis, a dinosaur park, is on the edge of town (Spain.info). Azorín called Albarracín "one of the most beautiful towns in Spain" (Turismo de Aragón). Eat Jamón de Teruel and Ternasco de Aragón lamb, both Designations of Origin (Turismo de Aragón).
Els Ports. The Parc Natural dels Ports, declared in 2001, covers 35,050 ha of the Catalan side of the massif (Parcs Naturals de Catalunya).
Ribagorza. Near Enduropark Isábena, Roda de Isábena has the former cathedral of San Vicente, "considered the most ancient in Aragón and the smallest in Spain" (Turismo de Aragón).
Costa Blanca. Orihuela, near Hardcore Spain, offers "the sea and sun, a monumental city centre, and three excellent eighteen-hole golf courses" (Spain.info).
Getting there
Spain's airports are run by Aena (Aena). Transfer times below are as each operator states them.
Málaga (AGP) serves the three Málaga operators and Holeshot's Málaga days. Trailworld is 35 minutes away and collects you for a fee. Jarvis is about 45 minutes away and charges €80 each way. Dust Devils includes hotel-to-base transfers.
Granada (GRX) is Granada's airport. Sacromonte, in Granada, does not include airport transfers.
Alicante (ALC) is the airport for Holeshot, which collects you, and Hardcore Spain, 25 minutes away, which charges for transfers. Suntrails is 1h45 from Alicante and Spanish Enduro Trails about 2 hours.
Región de Murcia (RMU) is 1 hour from Suntrails and 1h35 from Spanish Enduro Trails (Aena). Almería (LEI) is 1h25 from Suntrails.
Reus (REU), Zaragoza (ZAZ) and Barcelona (BCN) serve TrailbikeTours: 1h35, 1h50 and 2h25. Enduropark Isábena's Trans-Pyrenees tour starts from Barcelona and ends in San Sebastián, with return flights from Bilbao. Girona-Costa Brava (GRO) is the airport for Girona province, home to Soloenduro.
Ferry. Brittany Ferries sails from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander and Bilbao, with one- or two-night crossings. TrailbikeTours says: "From Bilbao it's less than 5 hours drive".
When to go
Spain's climate changes a lot by region and height. Long-term averages from AEMET, the state weather agency (1981–2010):
| Station | July mean high | Winter | Rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Málaga airport | 30.5 °C | Wettest: November and December, 100 mm each | 534 mm a year |
| Granada airport, 560 m | 34.8 °C | 16.8 frost days a year | Not listed here |
| Almería airport | 30.5 °C | January mean high 16.9 °C | 200 mm a year |
| Alicante | 30.3 °C | Wettest: September, 56 mm | 311 mm a year |
| Zaragoza airport | 32.4 °C | April mean high 19.6 °C | May: 44 mm |
| Teruel, 902 m (1986–2010) | 31.3 °C | 21.9 frost days, 2.5 snow days | May: 57 mm |
Operator seasons: Dust Devils rides "almost daily throughout the year". TrailbikeTours publishes prices for January to December. Enduropark Isábena rides from April to October. Spanish Enduro Trails rides only from 16 October to 31 May. Trailworld calls April to June "very pleasant" and July and August "quite hot".
Summer brings fire-risk closures of forest tracks. Dates vary by region; see when to ride in Spain.
