Hard enduro tours in Portugal

Portugal has a world championship hard enduro race, Extreme XL Lagares, near Porto. Most tours here are not hard enduro, though. Check the grade before you book.

Hard enduro products, in the operators' words:

  • Enduro Tours Portugal: levels from Easy to Extreme, and it says it will "never mix groups". From €235 a day.
  • Excape: a Hard Enduro tour graded "hard" to "very hard", from its Lagares base. €1,050 for 2 riding days, plus a €400 damage deposit.
  • Freeride Spirit: an XL Lagares package: watch the race on your bike as a spectator, then ride its trails once it ends. 4–7 days, €2,995.
  • TDS Enduro Algarve: "diverse trails from singletrack to hard enduro" in the Algarve, €300–€420 a day.

If you want trail riding, not hard enduro, Algarve Trailriding says plainly that it does "not do hard enduro or extreme enduro". Excape's Drop In and Standard tours are graded Low/Medium.

How to choose a tour in Portugal

  1. Licence. Most operators require a road motorcycle licence. Let's Ride wants A or A2. Offroad Motorcycle Adventures Portugal and Enduro Madeira want A2. Estrela Enduro wants one held for at least a year. Excape, Freeride Spirit, Intrepid Trails and Portugal Enduros also require one. TDS says you don't need one "for off-road enduro with us". Enduro Madeira offers a private tour if you have none. Enduro Portugal and Enduro Tours Portugal don't say. Algarve Trailriding asks for one for training but doesn't say for its rides.
  2. Insurance. Third-party cover is the usual inclusion. Excape adds personal accident cover. Estrela Enduro includes basic health and accident cover during the tour. Freeride Spirit's terms and tour pages disagree on injury cover. Portugal Enduros excludes personal injury cover on day tours. Let's Ride, Intrepid Trails, Estrela Enduro, Offroad Motorcycle Adventures Portugal and Enduro Portugal recommend your own travel insurance.
  3. Bike damage. Deposits differ a lot: Estrela Enduro €1,000, Enduro Madeira €500, Excape €400 (charged at booking), Offroad Motorcycle Adventures Portugal €200. Freeride Spirit's basic cover leaves all bike damage to you; €30-a-day cover covers damage up to €600. Intrepid Trails says "all reasonable damage" is included. Enduro Madeira covers light damage but not replacement parts.
  4. Own bike or rental. Freeride Spirit takes your own bike; contact it in advance. Algarve Trailriding is built around your own bike: €240 a day guided, or €40 to join a tour. No operator here publishes a bike-transport service.
  5. Where you'll ride. In Portugal, unpaved public roads are open to registered, insured, road-legal bikes. Beaches, dunes and cliffs are banned. Off-track riding is banned in protected zones such as Peneda-Gerês and Serra da Lousã. Summer fire danger closes forest roads. Read where riding is legal in Portugal. Excape, Freeride Spirit, Enduro Tours Portugal, Offroad Motorcycle Adventures Portugal and Enduro Madeira say their bikes are road-legal or insured for the road. Enduro Portugal's copy mentions "secluded beaches" and Intrepid Trails lists "Sand dunes and Beach". No operator names a permit. Ask them in writing where you'll ride.
  6. Group size. Estrela Enduro runs private tours for 1 to 4 riders. Algarve Trailriding and Offroad Motorcycle Adventures Portugal take up to 5. Enduro Portugal limits tours to 6, and Let's Ride normally rides with 3 to 6. Freeride Spirit needs at least 2. TDS charges €420 for a solo rider and €300 each for 3 or more.
  7. Airport. Let's Ride and Portugal Enduros include Faro (FAO) transfers on multi-day trips. Freeride Spirit and Excape include Porto (OPO). Estrela Enduro collects from Lisbon (LIS) for €60 per person. Enduro Madeira includes Madeira (FNC) transfers on multi-day trips.

Things to do around the riding

Western Algarve and Monchique. Four operators are here. TDS also rides in the Algarve; its articles name Faro and Vilamoura. Fóia, at 902 m, is the highest point in the Algarve; Picota viewpoint is 774 m. Caldas de Monchique is a spa whose waters have been used since Roman times. The Casa do Medronho in Marmelete distils medronho brandy. The Barranco do Demo boardwalk is in Alferce. Local food includes cured sausages (enchidos), cozido, honey, medronho and melosa (Turismo do Algarve leaflet, in Portuguese). Enduro Portugal offers surf courses and SUP at Arrifana.

Porto and the Douro. Freeride Spirit and Excape are near Porto. UNESCO-listed sites in the north include Porto's historic centre with the Luiz I Bridge, the Alto Douro Wine Region, Guimarães and Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga (Porto and North tourism). The Douro is "the oldest demarcated wine region in the world", from 1756, and Douro and Port wines are protected designations of origin. Penafiel and Valongo are on the Vinho Verde Route (wine routes). Peneda-Gerês, "Portugal's only National Park", offers canoeing, horse riding, rafting and hiking (Peneda-Gerês).

Serra da Lousã. Freeride Spirit's Lousã tour bases at Gondramaz, an artists' village. It is one of the mountain's schist villages, with Talasnal, the largest, Candal and Cerdeira. Try talasnicos pastries in Talasnal. Hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and river bathing are on offer (Centre of Portugal tourism). The Senhora da Piedade river beach sits near Lousã Castle (Senhora da Piedade).

Serra da Estrela. Estrela Enduro is in Fundão. The Serra da Estrela Natural Park covers 101,000 ha and holds the highest point in mainland Portugal, the country's only ski slope and the glacial Zêzere valley (natural park). Serra da Estrela cheese is made only from Bordaleira sheep's milk. Walk the glacial valleys or visit the Historical Villages (Serra da Estrela).

Alentejo. From the Alentejo coast, the big sight inland is Évora's UNESCO-listed centre: the Roman Temple, the Cathedral and Praça do Giraldo (Visit Alentejo).

Islands: Madeira. Enduro Madeira rides here. The Laurissilva forest has been UNESCO World Heritage since 1999. It covers about 15,000 ha, roughly 20% of the island, and you walk it on trails and levadas (Laurissilva). Pico Ruivo (1,862 m) and Pico do Areeiro (1,818 m) are the high peaks. Madeira wine and rum are made here (Visit Madeira). Swimming and diving work almost all year; the sea runs from 18 °C in winter to 24 °C in summer (weather).

Getting there

Faro (FAO) is 4 km from the city and serves the Algarve (ANA). It passed 10 million passengers in 2025 and flies to 77 destinations in 22 countries (ANA newsroom, in Portuguese). Let's Ride and Portugal Enduros include Faro transfers on multi-day trips.

Porto (OPO) is about 11 km from Porto. Freeride Spirit and Excape include the transfer.

Lisbon (LIS) is 7 km from the centre. Estrela Enduro collects from Lisbon for €60 per person. Offroad Motorcycle Adventures Portugal is 1.5 hours away and charges extra for pickup. Intrepid Trails says Lisbon and Porto both work, and it can arrange transfers. Enduro Tours Portugal collects from a train station.

Islands: Madeira (FNC). The airport is in Santa Cruz, about 16 km from Funchal (ANA). The flight from Lisbon takes about 90 minutes (Visit Madeira). Enduro Madeira includes airport transfers on multi-day trips.

When to go

Mainland Portugal has rainy winters and dry summers. Mean annual temperature runs from about 7 °C in the northern and central inland highlands to about 18 °C on the southern coast. Rain is heaviest in the Minho and Douro Litoral and lightest in inland Baixo Alentejo (IPMA, in Portuguese). Madeira averages 15 °C in winter and 25 °C in summer. Its north and mountains are wetter and windier, and rain, wind or fog can close trails for a time (Visit Madeira).

Operator seasons: Portugal Enduros sells "year-round" tours. Intrepid Trails, Offroad Motorcycle Adventures Portugal and TDS say their climate suits riding all year. Freeride Spirit gives September to June as the best time for its Porto tour, and says "Spring and Autumn are preferred by many riders". Algarve Trailriding closes in July and August for fire risk and reopens on 1 September.

In summer, fire danger can close forest roads at short notice, with or without a sign. Read the fire-season rules before you book a summer trip.
